Trichy
- History of the City
Trichy or Tiruchirappalli is an important city in Tamil nadu. Trichy has many temples and historical monuments.
According to archeological evidences and ancient literatures, Uraiyur, a small town near Trichy, served as the capital of the Chola Dynastry. Later, Trichy came into the reign of Pallava Dynasty under King mahendra Varma Pallava I. Then it was part of the Pandiya dynasty for some years before which King Adithya Chola brought it back to Chola Dynasty. The Hoysala kings ruled Trichy since 1255 A.D. Then, the Pandya kings overcame the Hoysalas to take control of Trichy. The Pandya kings ruled Trichy till the Mughals came to power. From the Mughals, the Vijyanagara emperors took over and their Nayaks or Governors ruled Trichy till 1735 A.D. It was during this time, the Srirangam Temple, Fort and the Theppakulam were built.
Later, the Muslims ruled over Trichy with the help of French and British.
The Muslims ruled this region again with the aid of either the French or the English armies. Then Trichy came under British control and remained with them till our Independence. Trichy was a main centre where the wars of Carnatic were fought between British and French during the 18th Century.
